We all know dogs can be the most loyal companions out of any pet. All dogs have unique personalities and traits. But this blog post takes dive into the uniqueness of the Pug dog breed. Which is the inspiration behind creating the “See-Key Pug Love” illustration.
Although I am not a Pug owner… at least not yet—I had this idea to create a Pug character. This is not anything extravagant. Pugs have been spotlighted in multiple TV, film, and literary creative works. So, why not add another take on the Pug as a character with this illustration design? They’re fun.
The “See-key Pug Love” illustration will capture the hearts of dog lovers, especially those who favor Pugs. I thought I would share three key inspirational insights that led to this character illustration.

- The Pug Interesting History and origin
Their history and origin also compliments their uniqueness as well. The Pug fascination and breeding dates back over 2000 years to China, being bred as loyal canine companions to emperors.
Being small and flat-faced dogs, they were so loved and adored. They adored them to the point that some emperors assigned soldiers as bodyguards for them. I’ve heard of guard dogs but not dogs having guards.
The American Kennel Association website proposes the name “ Pug” originated and stuck with this dog breed. This is because of their exaggerated facial expressions. Also, them having similar facial features to Marmoset Monkeys, who were popular pets in the 17th century.
The interesting reason behind their flat faces is due to a genetic mutation caused by a disrupted gene called SMOC2. This genetic trait is named Brachycephaly. This genetic trait is also means “shortened skull”. Brachycephaly comes with a share of health problems, primarily breathing complications.
In the mid-15th century, European traders, presumably the Dutch, transported the Pug breed to Europe. Royalty and Nobility figures were the fondest fans and customers of the Pug. They were the only ones that had the financial acclaim to afford them. Pugs eventually spread to France and England. By the 20th century, Pugs reached worldwide attention.

- Pugs have Unique Traits and Features that Set Them Apart.
After researching their history and origin, Pugs have some unique physical features. They are equipped with human-like large eyes, wrinkly expressionistic foreheads, muscular body builds, and miniature curly tails. When observing these features, the words “unique and set apart” came to mind, as well as the following scripture:
Psalm 139:14
I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Marvelous are Your works,
The words “wonderfully made” in the original Hebrew is “palah”. This means “distinct, unique and set apart”. King David was receiving a revelation God’s sovereign creative power. He was in “Awe” or astonishme f—or humanity—as Pugs.
But using Pugs as an analogy. Their physical features serve as an example of short comings. However, these are the very things that make them unique and set apart.
By acknowledging God and embracing our shortcomings, spiritually covers us in humility. He can use those shortcomings to inspire others to believe His sovereignty and wonderful works are real.
To Piggyback or rather “Puggybacking” off the wonderfully made point, He is wonderful because we are made in His image. This make our reflection of him is set apart from deities and idols. (Gen 1:26).

- Affectionate and Playful Companions
Comprising their interesting history, unique physical traits, the Pug was bred to be a companion dog. Over centuries of human interaction, they have developed a strong love for their owners and people in general. Combining the character ‘s name, “ See-Key” with the words “Pug Love”, is a hint to the characters unique personality. Which he inspires the trait of humility. And the trait to seek key opportunities to love others like God through His Word, even though he’s a dog.
